Staying Warm And Comfy – San Antonio Heating Systems

San Antonio Heating System

During the winter, the cold temperature can become rather uncomfortable, and no one likes to sit in their home shivering. Many homeowners have a heating, ventilation air conditioner unit, also known as an HVAC. We crank up the thermostat and let it do what it does best – warm up our home. There’s nothing better than coming in from the cold outdoors and into a pre-warmed home where you can just sit back and relax with a glass or cup of your favorite beverage.

What You Can Do To Help your Heating System

Some people say ‘just put some more layers on’ but multiple layers of clothing can also become uncomfortable, especially if you’re doing something where you’re moving around. Although it’s nice just to turn on the HVAC System and allow it to heat up your home, there are some things that you can do at home to help keep the warmth inside.

  • Go hunting for drafts – Any gaps that you have around your home will be allowing the warm air to escape and for cold air to come in. Spend some time draft proofing your home, and once there are no little gaps for the freezing air to blow through, you’ll feel an instant difference. It will also help you to save money on your energy bills as your heating system, ventilation, AC unit doesn’t need to work so hard to keep the rooms warm. Sealing up the gaps will also help your AC unit throughout the summer.
  • HVAC tune-up – Have your heating and air conditioning unit serviced. Get this done in Autumn, before the chilly winter days set in. A maintenance check will ensure that your HVAC is in perfect working condition and that there are no repairs needed. This will keep your unit energy efficient during the winter and your heating system will be running without problems.
  • Timing is everything – Set your HVAC to turn on a few hours before everyone wakes up. You’ll be waking up to a much warmer home, and this makes it a lot easier to get out of bed. Only use your HVAC when there are people in to feel it’s benefit – if you have it warming up your home, but there is no one there, it’s a complete waste of heat, energy, and money.
  • Keep the curtains shut – During the daytime, it’s nicer to have your curtains open to let in all of the daylight, but you should try to keep them shut. If no one is home, or you don’t mind having them shut, it will help to keep some of the heat inside of your home.  Whether it’s curtains, shutters or blinds, they all contribute to keeping that extra bit of warmth inside.
  • Insulate the atticHeat rises, so if you want to keep your home warmer for longer, don’t let the heat escape through the attic. Insulating your attic will save you money on energy bills as there won’t be significant amounts of warm air escaping. Your HVAC unit will be able to warm up your home a lot faster if the attic is properly insulated.
  • Buy a carpet or rug – If you have wooden floors, you could consider having a carpet laid, or purchasing a rug. Wooden floors can allow cold air to enter your home so putting down a rug during the winter can stop heat from escaping. It’s also a lot nicer to step onto when you get out of bed than a cold wooden floor.
  • Turn down your thermostat – Turning up the temperature of your thermostat may seem like an excellent way to keeping you warm when it’s feeling that extra bit chilly, but it can increase your energy use and costs. Keep the thermostat of your heating system set at a temperature that’s comfortable but not so hot that you can only walk around your home in summer clothes.
